Chandigarh: The North American Punjabi Association expressed strong condemnation on Sunday regarding the recent attack on an NRI in Amritsar, labeling it as “deeply troubling.”
The incident occurred on Saturday in Daburji village, where Sukhchain Singh, who had recently returned from the United States, was shot in front of his family at their home. The shocking attack unfolded before his wife and his two children from a previous marriage.
Satnam Singh Chahal, the executive director of the US-based North American Punjabi Association, voiced his concerns, stating, “The attack on an NRI in Punjab is deeply troubling and warrants condemnation.” He stressed that acts of violence not only endanger individuals but also instill fear and insecurity within the Punjabi diaspora community. He highlighted the importance of ensuring a safe and respected environment for this community, which plays a vital role in investing and maintaining cultural ties to their home state.
Chahal emphasized that addressing such alarming incidents requires a joint effort from local authorities and community leaders to enhance law enforcement and achieve justice. He stated, “The situation should be treated with utmost seriousness to prevent further incidents and to restore confidence among the NRI community.”
He further noted the necessity of taking proactive measures to tackle the root causes of violence and to reinforce the safety and security of all residents and visitors in Punjab. This approach is pivotal in rebuilding trust and fostering a safer environment for everyone.
Details of the incident reveal that on Saturday, Singh was confronted outside his home by two armed assailants on a motorcycle, who inquired about the registration documents of his luxury vehicle. Before Singh could respond, the attackers brandished pistols and forcibly took him inside his house.
Inside the residence, they fired three shots at Singh before fleeing the scene. He sustained gunshot wounds to the head and near the chest and was swiftly transported to a private hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
In response to the incident, police apprehended five individuals on Sunday, including the father of Singh’s first wife. Authorities are actively pursuing the two attackers responsible for the shooting.
