Jalandhar: The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) today expressed dissatisfaction over the attitude of the government while providing admission to NRIs in medical colleges of the state.
Addressing mediapersons here today, Satnam Singh Chahal, NAPA executive director and Rani Mahal, NAPA chairperson, said the Punjab Government, on one hand, was leaving no stone unturned for spreading its message to encourage Punjabi diaspora to connect with their roots but on the other hand, Punjabi NRIs were deprived from taking admissions in medical colleges.
They said there was not a single instance in the world where the government had interfered in the education system, directly or indirectly. However, things were otherwise in India where the governments were directly interfering in the education system, pushing the future of students in the dark.
They said 15 per cent of medical seats were reserved for eligible NRI candidates but these seats were somehow being converted into general quota seats. Capable students from all over the world tried to come to India to help build a brighter future but this was being denied by a dysfunctional system. Students trying to get in touch with their roots were discouraged by a flawed system. They said the high fee structure for NRI students did not make sense as compared to general and management students if the requirements were the same.
